About: Highly influenced by the calligraphy and illustration skills, Toofly entered the School of Visual Arts (SVA). A minute with "WIth We Kill You"

First became aware of WKY you in 2005. Was featured in our "Hallow Wheat Paste" show on Halloween in 2006.....we just printed these little beauties for WKY......in the meantime, enjoy a "pit stop" with WKY for a Q & A quickie....S.R.~

S.R.: in reading your bio, I see your hs school teacher supported what you were doing.
How did that person have a genuine & direct impact on your art?

WKY: Not really, she was kinda crazy because she she used to date the drummer of Pink Floyd and do a lot of drugs. She did though allow me to used as much of the schools supplies as i wanted which was pretty awesome. I guess though it was in her class that i really decided that this was something that i wanted to do for my future.

S.R.: the reason for that brand of character. You must have many to choose from but the one most often I identify to are the Big Round Black Eyes & jagged teeth coming at you man. What gives with that? Reminds me of piranha. (I may have gotten away with two in one here; haha)

WKY: Ya that face seemed to be the first thing that i started to do and it would appear on all the different monsters that i would post around the place. Its become the logo for my work, and evidently, the sticker i have come to you to create! Over the past half year though i have been starting to paint some characters that have lots of eyes and look very hairy. i guess ill see how the 2 worlds collide!

S.R: also from the bio, you say you became experimental & saw the need for art in your life.
How so in both cases? How experimental & how the need in your life?

WKY: Towards the end of high school i realized that there were 2 things that kept me most happy: skateboarding, and art. I would stay up all night on my computer trying to learn the adobe suite of programs and on my weekends, would put all my money towards screen printing supplies and making shirts. I was never really great at learning through the school system so had to find ways to do it on my own. Today all the toys that i make, the paintings, the computer based work, everything really was all self taught. School did not really teach me anything

S.R.: your installations are dope. what is the largest install to date you have done?

WKY: Hmmm well i just had a show in San Francisco in March and my friend Mikie and I turned the gallery into the inside of an old house. The front window had a lawn and front of a wooden house with a drunk dude passed out on the lawn, and the inside was covered with old wallpaper and had a fireplace and old books and stuff along side my art and toys. This summer i have a bunch of installations planned for the street with old decorated furniture and dummies. it should be good!

WKY: Right now i sell everything online at http://www.wekillyou.net. I will be spending the summer in Toronto, but when i get back to LA i will be doing some installations on the street there and hopefully get some toys and shirts into a few stores!

Peel Here V "Brace Yourself"

Peel Here V "A celebration of adhesive art".....this years theme "Brace Yourself" speaks to the current condition of world issues we all face. ....this year, we collaborate with Self Help Graphics & Art in East Los Angeles....featured artists from The London Police to Favianna Rodriguez have been invited for event number five (5)......we will transoform Self Help Graphics parking lot into "Sticker Disneyland" as some have called it.

Featured artists have been asked to Paint on a 20"x 27" sticker sheet.

We also have an OPEN CALL for Stickers from the Sticker Community.

These stickers will be passed out, put up on our installation as well as traded in our Sticker Trading Zone.....every year we host about 800 sticker hounds searching for the one thing that bind us all, Ah yes ADHESIVE better known as Stickers.......send in as many stickers as you like. Urban-MUSE Stickers & Campaign

I designed the MUSE sticker in the Fall of 2009, and it is the logical extension of a campaign I started in late 2007, dealing with the phrase "urban-muse"I made the original image by hand by carving a block of linoleum and then making a print of it on a rolling press. The girl used is a famous alt model I became enamored with and as a result was inspired to draw, and paint her numerous times, including a 10 foot mural sized Oil Painting. If it wasn't for this singular person I would not be an artist today. She changed my life forever, for the better.I think all art regardless of style, technique, or any other factor needs to have one important thing: It needs to be honest. To me the MUSE sticker with the crying, rough, and stoic face to me symbolizes everything I believe in as an artist and as a person, and is the most honest thing I have ever created. At one point in my life I feel I treated a person very close to my unkindly, and took her for granted, I threw away the only person who ever truly loved me with her heart and soul. She left me a photo on my iMac of her sitting at my desk with her hair parted to the side, and tears streaming down her beautiful face. That image has stuck in my head all these years later (about 4), and has largely shaped the course of my life. As a result i've tried to become a better person. I regret how I treated her, and instead of dwelling on all this negativity and I want to do something incredibly positive with it, and hopefully inspire other people, to draw, paint, compose, or even just be kind. The simple word MUSE I think is incredibly important and powerful to anyone in the creative field and even people who might not even think they are creative at all. Everyone has a muse, it might be a girl, a boy, an event, a piece of music, or even a pet or something. But everyone has that one thing that has the capability to set you off and unleash something great that you might not have thought you were even capable of. The muse sticker has been distributed extensively throughout the world, sticker shows, and the San Francisco Bay area. When the sticker is in an "urban" environment it quite literally becomes the physical embodiment of "urban-muse." The sticker has been mistaken for something to do with the British Rock Band "MUSE," and this is not the case but I do happen to like that band quite a great deal. In early 2010 The San Francisco Museum of Modern art started distributing stickers that said "MUSE" on them in honor of their 75th anniversary, it's a pretty interesting coincidence and the stickers are similar, but my sticker predates it slightly. I highly encourage every person, to search for their own personal muse. To my Muse "X", I cannot thank her enough for letting her me use her image in a lot of my work. And to the girl who It was originally based on...I know she must see it in the streets often, and I hope she just knows... I am sorry.

Sal Barbier is well known as one of the most stylish street skaters of the 1990's as well as the designer of one of the best & highly revered skate shoes of all time, "The Etnies Sal23". Sal's notable career began in 1988 when he was sponsord by for H-Street, one of the best skate companies of that time. After turning pro in 1989, Sal joined forces with Etnies that following year & went on to design The Sal23 to wide public acclaim in 1994. As most things go, one must bang their own drum from time to time. No different when having your own business. The imergence of the internet into the hands of our new generation at the helm know all too well, "if....................................

..........you're not out their gloating from time to time about you & your crew, meeting your clientel, showing up to the events you sponsor, give aways, blog, events, pissing people off, giving away stickers, trade shows, send stickers out", you're business is all but through. No doubt, Sticky Ricks' is the SHIT job to have. But it is work when you break it down too. Is so important to be good & commit to something. Is an awesome feeling to see people & events develop and grow from something you contributed or did in order to help someone elses endeavor. Not looking for compensation. Is important to to have a support system for artists. I would hope more artists would support one another. No ego, just making art. Changing the way people look at yours & my world is important. Sticky Ricks' has been making a difference since the fall of 05', printing stickers, putting on art shows & kicking the door (so-to speak) in order to say "sticker art is an legitimate art form".
